IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) - A professional financial planner who has completed a series of courses and has passed examinations in subject areas such as insurance, securities and taxes. The designation is awarded by the Institute of Certified Financial Planners. Registered Investment Adviser ( RIA) - A person or business who, for compensation, engages in the business of advising others as to the value of securities or the advisability of purchasing or selling securities. RIAs are required to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Form ADV - The uniform form for use by investment advisors to register and update registrations with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the jurisdictions that require advisors to register. The form is also used to comply with SEC Rule 206(4)-4, which obligates investment advisors to disclose relevant financial and disciplinary information to clients. Professional Investment Manager - A person who, for a fee, offers professional advice on the development of an investment plan and buys and sells securities on behalf of the customer to implement that plan. A professional investment manager may hold qualifications such as Certified Financial Planner, Registered Investment Adviser and/or Registered Broker. Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) - A person who has completed ten courses providing in-depth knowledge of the skills needed to perform comprehensive financial planning for their clients. The ChFC program focuses on the comprehensive financial planning process as an organized way to collect and analyze information on a client's financial goals; and to formulate, implement, and monitor a comprehensive plan to achieve those goals. Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) - A person who has completed ten courses providing insights into the life insurance business, its importance to the economy, its operation and distribution systems, and its resurging importance for safe and secure investments. The CLU designation is the undisputed professional credential for persons involved in the protection, accumulation, preservation, and distribution of the economic values of human life. Master of Science in Financial Services (MSFS) - A person who has completed a premier educational program for those financial services professionals whose goal in client service is to maintain the highest level of technical knowledge and practical application in serving their clients. It is designed to permit professionals to keep current in a particular area or to pursue knowledge encompassing all aspects of financial planning. Financial Paraplanner - A person who has completed the Foundations in Financial Planning Program and served an internship in the financial services industry. The Foundations in Financial Planning Program covers fundamental information on all aspects of the financial planning process. It presents a systematic introduction to different product categories, essential terminology, and general concepts of the process. Accredited Tax Advisor (ATA) - A person who can handle all the tax needs of highly compensated clients and owners of closely held businesses, including evaluating qualified retirement plans and recommending advanced estate planning techniques. The Accredited Tax Advisor program is made up of six courses covering such tax issues as: entity selection and operation of proprietorships, partnerships and corporations; taxation of qualified plan distributions and plan selection; charitable giving techniques; revocable living trusts, tax return filing considerations; and compensation planning techniques. >
